Quality Standards and Codes for Steel Frame Construction in India

Steel construction is only as good as its documentation. Here is the compliance framework every client should be asking their contractor about.

The codes that govern

Material certification

Insist on mill test certificates traceable to the delivered heat number. For galvanised light gauge sections, verify the zinc coating mass (typically Z275, i.e. 275 g/m²) — this is the single biggest determinant of service life and the easiest place for a supplier to cut cost invisibly.

Welding and fabrication

• Welders qualified to IS 817 / relevant WPQ
• Approved Welding Procedure Specifications for each joint type
• Visual inspection on 100% of welds
• Ultrasonic or radiographic testing on a defined percentage of full-penetration butt welds
• Dimensional check of fabricated assemblies against the model before dispatch

Erection stage checks

1. Anchor bolt survey before steel arrives on site
2. Plumb and level survey at each floor
3. Bolt torque verification records for HSFG connections
4. Grouting and base plate inspection
5. Touch-up of damaged coatings before enclosure

Corrosion protection

Specify by exposure category, not by habit. Internal dry environments may need only a shop primer; coastal or industrial exposure needs a full paint system or hot-dip galvanising to IS 4759. Get the specification stated in microns of dry film thickness and verify it with a gauge.

Fire protection

Choose the strategy at design stage, because it affects cost significantly: intumescent coating, board encasement, concrete filling, or designing sections large enough to satisfy the required rating unprotected.

What to ask your contractor for

• Design calculations sealed by a licensed structural engineer
• Mill certificates and coating test reports
• WPS and welder qualification records
• NDT reports
• As-built survey and inspection sign-offs

If a contractor cannot produce this pack on request, the price difference you were offered is not a saving — it is a transfer of risk to you.
